Description

In the fall of 2004, our work with teacher candidates (TCs) at Buffalo State College (BSC) involved facilitating a literacy methods course/practicum at an urban-based professional development school (PDS). As English language arts (ELA) specialists, we had already established a reputation as family literacy trainers in communities surrounding Buffalo. It was not surprising, then, when the PDS administrators asked us to present a series of workshops for families of children enrolled at the site. Having been successful in attracting and satisfying parents with our workshops in the past, we felt prepared to meet with PDS parents to "show and tell" about the various practices that "involved" parents can use in the home to support their children's literacy development. We were disappointed, to say the least, when after sending out the usual announcements about the potential learning benefits, the free books/materials, and tempting refreshments, neither the first nor second scheduled workshop attracted any participants. This lack of family response became the impetus for our odyssey of discovery, an action research quest to answer the following questions: How can we effectively involve the parents in this high-poverty, urban PDS site in their children's literacy growth at home and at school? How can we invite our own TCs and their cooperating teachers into the quest as well? This article is our attempt to detail that quest. We begin with a literature review focusing on studies that: 1) examine reasons why low-income urban parents resist and/or fail to participate in their children's education, both at school and at home, and 2) describe strategies and practices teachers can use to reverse resistant attitudes on the part of parents. We then describe the tri-phased odyssey through which we, along with our TCs and their cooperating teachers, proceeded in order to develop and improve parental connections with the school and the literacy successes of their children.
