Introduction The quality of teaching and learning depends on the professional development (PD) of teachers (Moswela, 2006; Van Veen & Sleegers, 2006). Furthermore, PD of teachers is regarded as a necessity for schools to intentionally care for learners for the sake of their improved performance. Successful PD is that which is embedded in daily practice, needs based and linked to learner needs, tailored to meet the specific circumstances or contexts of teachers and sustained over a period of time (What is Professional Learning, n.d.; Lee, 2005).
